Sébastien Haller endured a frustrating evening despite FC Utrecht securing a crucial 1-0 win over NAC Breda in the Eredivisie.
The Ivorian striker, who has yet to find the net in the league this season, was left disappointed after missing several scoring opportunities.
Haller, who has already opened his account in the Dutch Cup, came close to breaking his Eredivisie drought but was denied by the woodwork.
While Utrecht celebrated an important victory, the forward admitted his personal frustration at failing to get on the scoresheet.
Haller acknowledges struggles in front of goal
Speaking to ESPN after the match, Haller expressed mixed emotions about the result.
“The feeling in the locker room is very good because we desperately needed this win,” he said. “We invested a lot, so it was welcome.”
However, the former Ajax and Borussia Dortmund forward was candid about his struggles.
For me, it was frustrating because it’s difficult to leave the pitch without a goal.
Even though I hit the post, we still scored, and that is the most important thing.
But as a striker, you always want to score. That is the mindset of a striker.
I have a special bond with the club, and I want it to succeed.
Haller’s disappointment is understandable, given his proven track record as a prolific goalscorer.
His return to the Eredivisie was expected to bring goals, but he remains without one in league play.
Coach Ron Jans backs his striker
Utrecht head coach Ron Jans acknowledged Haller’s struggles and the pressure he has placed on himself to deliver.
“I talk to him because he puts a lot of pressure on himself to score goals and be important,” Jans explained. “Things have been a bit more difficult in recent weeks.
He did well against PSV, and he was also good in this game.
When you see him happy, you have to watch him carefully because he keeps his emotions inside, but he has them.
Despite his current goal drought, Haller continues to be an influential figure for Utrecht, contributing with his physical presence and ability to create chances.
The club remains confident that his breakthrough in the league is only a matter of time.
With Utrecht pushing to climb the Eredivisie table, Haller will be eager to rediscover his scoring touch in the upcoming fixtures.
His experience and composure in front of goal have never been in doubt, and once he finds the back of the net, the goals could begin to flow again.
