Sébastien Desabre: World Cup qualification would lift DR Congo amid national challenges

DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has underlined the wider significance of World Cup qualification, insisting the national team’s journey goes far beyond results on the pitch as preparations continue for the global tournament.

Reflecting on recent performances, Desabre dismissed suggestions of a setback following the team’s campaign, instead highlighting lessons learned from their African Cup of Nations run in Ivory Coast and subsequent matches in Morocco.

“I did not view it as regression after what we achieved in the Ivory Coast. We took many positives from Morocco, although the campaign was shorter than hoped,” Desabre told reporters.

Looking ahead, the Frenchman stressed the historic importance of reaching football’s biggest stage, noting the potential impact on a new generation of Congolese fans.

“Going to the World Cup means a generation of Congolese will see for the first time their heroes competing at the greatest football tournament,” he said.

Desabre also pointed to the broader social impact of success, describing football as a unifying force during difficult times in the country.

“Amid the problems in the country, that can only lift the mood of the people. My players are acutely aware of the positive role they can play by performing to the best of their abilities,” he added.

DR Congo have been drawn in Group K, where they will face Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan in what promises to be a demanding group-stage campaign.
