DR Congo: Pressure mounts on Sébastien Desabre ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers

Democratic Republic of Congo head coach Sebastien Desabre reflected on his team’s dramatic victory over Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African playoffs.

Congo edged out the Super Eagles in a tense match that was ultimately decided by penalties, winning 4-3 after both sides played to a draw.

Desabre stressed that his team’s achievement was the result of hard work and a positive environment.

“We’re operating in a healthy environment that puts the players in the best possible position to perform. I’ve always been convinced that my team was capable of reaching this level,” he shared.

Despite falling behind early, Desabre said, “It’s difficult to start a match down 1-0. But the team spirit remained high, and we chose to try and control the game.”

He congratulated not only his players but also the coaching staff, supporters, and government officials for their unwavering backing.

“Nigeria also deserves to be congratulated. The match was very close. We could have not qualified, but overall, I think we deserved the victory.”

With the playoffs behind them, Desabre noted, “Now it’s time to celebrate. We’ve just played 12 matches under a lot of pressure, and I know these battles have been a long time coming. We play to bring joy.”
