DR Congo head coach Sébastien Desabre has clarified his decision to exclude forward Cédric Bakambu from the squad for the final two matches of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers. Bakambu, who recently joined Real Betis, is undergoing rehabilitation after an injury and, according to Desabre, will focus on regaining his top form with his club before returning to the national side.
“Cédric is ours, he will always be welcome in the team,” Desabre stated, noting that Bakambu’s absence results from several considerations, primarily his recovery.
I spoke with him at length, honestly, I explained everything to him.
He must get back in his best shape; he’s working hard to secure his place at Betis.
He is a key member of the team, and he will still have a lot to offer us.”
Desabre’s choice to rest Bakambu aligns with his broader strategy for DR Congo’s squad, focusing on younger players and newer talent in the absence of stakes in the remaining qualifying games.
The coach explained that it was a calculated decision to give Bakambu the time he needs to reintegrate fully at the club level, ensuring he returns to the Leopards in peak condition for future competitions.
Looking toward the team’s future, Desabre highlighted the integration of younger talents, especially new dual nationals who have joined since the last AFCON tournament.
The coach remains dedicated to finding the right balance between experienced leaders and emerging players, a formula he believes will drive the Leopards’ long-term success.
“We must not forget too quickly the efforts of those who have been here since the last African Cup of Nations,” he explained.
“The national team is a common denominator for which everyone must fight to have their place.
There are ambitious and highly motivated youngsters, and we need them as much as we need our senior players—figures like Cédric, Chancel, or Gaël, who will certainly be back.”
Desabre’s approach shows his intent to shape a competitive squad by developing young players while valuing the leadership of established figures.
With DR Congo’s qualification for AFCON 2025 already secured, the upcoming matches will provide an opportunity for promising talents to gain international experience and further solidify the team’s depth.
This thoughtful rotation, Desabre believes, is essential to building a team that can compete at the highest level across future African tournaments.
