SDT halts FKF disciplinary action against McDonald Mariga in escalating leadership dispute

A leadership crisis within Kenyan football has deepened after the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) stepped in to temporarily block the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) from proceeding with disciplinary action against Vice President McDonald Mariga.

The ruling, delivered on May 22, followed an urgent application filed by Mariga challenging FKF’s decision to initiate disciplinary proceedings against him. The federation had been preparing to act on a charge sheet dated May 19, 2026, as internal tensions within the governing body intensified.

In its interim orders, the tribunal directed FKF to suspend any disciplinary measures against Mariga until the matter is fully heard and determined. The decision effectively places all internal proceedings on hold, offering the former Kenya international temporary relief as the legal process unfolds.

The SDT further instructed all parties to file their responses within seven days, setting the stage for a more detailed hearing in the coming weeks. The case is expected to return before the tribunal on June 2, when further directions will be issued.

At the heart of the dispute are growing divisions within FKF’s top leadership, particularly between Mariga and FKF President Hussein Mohammed. The disagreements are understood to centre on governance structures, decision-making authority, and broader concerns over the administration of football operations and finances.

The latest ruling adds another layer to an increasingly public power struggle within Kenyan football’s leadership ranks. In recent months, disagreements among senior officials have frequently spilled into formal legal and institutional channels, prompting concern among stakeholders about the stability and direction of the federation.

While the SDT decision does not resolve the underlying dispute, it temporarily shields Mariga from disciplinary action as the case proceeds. The outcome is likely to carry significant implications for FKF’s internal governance and how future leadership conflicts are managed within the country’s football administration.
