The aftermath of the Belgium-Ivory Coast friendly match on March 5 continues to stir controversy in Ivory Coast, more than a month later. While on the field, the Elephants showed character by clawing back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2-2, suspicions of events not adhering to the norm in Brussels have surfaced in the local press.
According to reports from the Abidjan Sports newspaper, echoed by international media, allegations suggest that players brought prostitutes into their hotel rooms two days before the match. “The Ivory Coast team indulged in a sleepless night on Monday, March 3, at their hotel in Brussels. Several players took advantage of the situation to bring prostitutes into their rooms,” Abidjan Sports reported. The publication also quoted a former international player who claimed that such incidents are not new to the Elephants.
However, the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) has vehemently denied these allegations. “In Brussels, we were accommodated in an upscale neighborhood, close to the institutions of the European Union, a secure area where such practices are prohibited,” stated Eric Kacou, head of FIF’s communications department.
These accusations have sparked controversy, raising questions about the conduct of the players and the leadership within the team.
