Saudi clubs keeping interest in Walid Regragui amid uncertain Morocco future

Speculation over the future of Walid Regragui has intensified despite firm denials from the Royal Moroccan Football Federation regarding any separation from the national team coach.

While the federation moved to dismiss rumours of an imminent departure, French outlet RMC Sport has maintained that Regragui’s tenure with the Atlas Lions is drawing to a close. According to the report, the Moroccan tactician has already taken the decision to resign and submitted his resignation months ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Even after a second official statement reiterated that there had been no split with the coach, the French network stood by its claims, suggesting that discussions are ongoing to formalise the exit and that an announcement could arrive at any time.

Amid the uncertainty, attention has shifted to the Saudi Pro League, where several top clubs are reportedly monitoring the situation closely. The report indicates that Regragui is attracting serious interest and may not remain without a role for long should his departure be confirmed.

Sources suggest that multiple Saudi sides have stepped up their efforts to engage the coach, keen to capitalise on the reputation he has built across the Arab football landscape.

His standing rose significantly following his historic run at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as well as earlier achievements with Al-Duhail SC and his CAF Champions League triumph with Wydad AC.

Regragui’s time in charge of the Morocco national football team has spanned three and a half years and marked a golden chapter in the nation’s football history. He guided Morocco to a groundbreaking semi final appearance at the 2022 World Cup, becoming the first African and Arab coach to reach that stage of the tournament.

More recently, he led the team to the final of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations hosted in Morocco. The campaign ended in heartbreak after a late defeat to Senegal national football team in a final overshadowed by contentious refereeing decisions and chaotic scenes, including threats of withdrawal from the Lions of Teranga.

Despite the federation’s public stance, the coming days could prove decisive as negotiations reportedly continue behind the scenes, with Saudi Arabia emerging as a possible next destination for one of African football’s most celebrated coaches.
