Saudi Arabia revive 2009 memories with historic first-half display against Oman

Saudi Arabia produced a landmark first-half performance against Oman in the Arabian Gulf Cup “Gulf 27”, scoring three times and creating a series of further chances at Al-Inma Stadium in Jeddah.

The two sides met on Saturday in the second round of the group stage, with the Saudi team delivering a display that recalled one of the most significant editions of the regional tournament 17 years ago.

According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiah, it was the first time Saudi Arabia had scored at least three goals in the first half of an Arabian Gulf Cup match since Gulf 19 in 2009.

The previous occasion came on 8 January 2009, when Saudi Arabia faced Yemen in the second round of Group B. The Green Falcons led 5-0 at half-time and went on to complete a 6-0 victory.

That tournament also featured a memorable meeting between Saudi Arabia and Oman, although the decisive match ended in disappointment for the Saudi side.

The final finished goalless after 90 minutes, before Oman won the title on penalties. Saudi Arabia’s performance against Oman in Jeddah therefore carried the added significance of a long-awaited response to that defeat.

Saudi Arabia’s latest three-goal first half was also their first in any match since June 2021. On that occasion, they again faced Yemen in the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and recorded the same 3-0 half-time score.

The 2009 match against Yemen remains the most prolific first-half display referenced in the comparison, with Saudi Arabia having scored five goals before the interval, rather than three.

The Arabian Gulf Cup meeting in Jeddah was played under the tournament branding Gulf 27, with the fixture taking place at Al-Inma Stadium. The result and performance gave the Green Falcons a notable statistical milestone while renewing memories of their previous encounters with Oman.
