Saudi Arabia hold historic edge over UAE before Gulf 27 final

Saudi Arabia will take a clear statistical advantage into the Gulf 27 final against United Arab Emirates, having won 23 of the teams’ 39 previous meetings.

United Arab Emirates have beaten Saudi Arabia seven times, while nine matches have ended in draws. Their long-running rivalry has produced a series of significant results across the Gulf Cup, World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers, the Arab Games and friendly internationals.

The two sides first met in the Gulf Cup in 1972, when Saudi Arabia recorded a 4-0 victory. The Green Falcons won the next two meetings, beating United Arab Emirates 2-0 in 1974 and by the same scoreline in 1976.

Saudi Arabia continued that strong start with a 2-1 win in the 1979 tournament. United Arab Emirates claimed their first Gulf Cup victory over Saudi Arabia in 1982, winning 1-0, before the teams played out a goalless draw at Gulf 7 in 1984.

The rivalry has since extended well beyond the regional tournament, with the sides meeting in World Cup and Asian Cup qualifying, the Arab Games and a number of friendly matches.

United Arab Emirates have produced notable wins

Although Saudi Arabia have the stronger overall record, United Arab Emirates have enjoyed important victories at key moments.

They won 2-0 at Gulf 8 in 1986 and followed that with a 1-0 success at Gulf 11 in 1992. United Arab Emirates then defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 at Gulf 16 in 2003, before winning 1-0 at Gulf 18 in 2007.

Their more recent successes include a 2-1 victory in World Cup qualifying in 2017 and another 2-1 win in a friendly in 2019.

Saudi Arabia’s most emphatic result in the fixture came in a 5-1 friendly victory in 2000. The Green Falcons also won successive World Cup qualifying matches against United Arab Emirates in 2008 and 2009, recording victories by 2-1 and 3-2.

At Gulf 19 in 2009, Saudi Arabia added another notable victory, beating United Arab Emirates 3-0.

The meetings have been more closely contested in recent years. A 2016 World Cup qualifying fixture ended 1-1, although Saudi Arabia won the return match 3-0. The most recent Gulf-related meeting listed in the record was a goalless draw at the Arab Cup in 2021.

Final offers a fresh contest

Saudi Arabia’s historical advantage provides context, but it will not decide the final. A trophy match is determined by what each team delivers over 90 minutes rather than by results from previous decades.

Saudi Arabia will aim to extend its dominance in the fixture and add another title, while United Arab Emirates will see the final as an opportunity to reduce the historical gap with another important victory over the Green Falcons.

After a rivalry spanning more than five decades, Gulf 27 provides a new chapter. Saudi Arabia have the stronger record, but United Arab Emirates have memories of success in major matches. The trophy will go to the team that handles the final’s decisive moments most effectively.
