Samuel Umtiti warns Real Madrid’s Mbappe, Vinicius and Bellingham must overcome ‘selfishness’

Samuel Umtiti has criticised Real Madrid after their 2-1 victory over Inter Milan, saying the Spanish side have “a lot of weaknesses” and warning that the attacking trio of Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham must put aside their “selfishness” if they are to succeed.

Real Madrid began their Champions League campaign with a win against Inter at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.

However, former Barcelona defender Umtiti believes the result masked significant problems in the Real Madrid side and suggested they were fortunate to take all three points.

“Real Madrid will suffer this year… There are so many weaknesses in this team,” Umtiti said on the After Foot RMC programme.

“Sometimes, there are huge gaps in midfield; defending is almost impossible.”

The former France international added that Real Madrid did not look like a well-organised team during the match.

“Tonight, they were lucky. I don’t see a cohesive team; there is absolutely nothing,” he said.

Umtiti acknowledged the quality available to Real Madrid in attack, but argued that their most prominent players need to work more effectively together.

“Mbappe, Vinicius and Bellingham can help each other a lot,” he said.

“They can be amazing. But there is a lot of selfishness between them. If that is not abandoned, it will never work. If I were the coach, I would take the three of them and talk to them.”

Real Madrid’s win over Inter came in the opening round of the Champions League, with the home side doing enough to secure a narrow victory despite the concerns raised by Umtiti.

His comments focused particularly on the balance of the team, with the former Barcelona player questioning the protection offered by the midfield and the overall defensive structure.

He also suggested that the attacking ability of Mbappe, Vinicius and Bellingham could become a major strength if the three players were prepared to combine more selflessly.

Umtiti’s assessment was shared in a video from the After Foot RMC programme, in which he said Real Madrid would struggle during the season unless they addressed the weaknesses he identified.
