Samuel Eto’o Chooses Unusual Number 5 at Everton
By BBC Sport
Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o has kicked off his new chapter at Everton by selecting the surprising squad number 5 for his two-year stint with the Premier League club.
Traditionally associated with defenders or midfielders, the number 5 is an unexpected choice for Eto’o, who throughout his illustrious career has favoured numbers featuring the iconic ‘9’—a symbol of his role as a central striker. The decision has sparked lively debate among fans and football commentators online, with some humorously suggesting Eto’o might be lining up in defence.
One Twitter user joked: “Eto’o with the number 5? What could be more normal!! He will be an opposing defender.”
Eto’o was officially unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday, where he expressed enthusiasm about joining Everton and his readiness to contribute to the team. “I’m very happy to be here. I’m really looking forward to wearing the blue Everton jersey,” he said. “I was very impressed by the style of play the team adopts. I could see straight away that at this club I’m going to have the opportunity to play football.”
The former Chelsea forward also praised Everton manager Roberto Martínez, highlighting his passion and tactical understanding. “I had the chance to speak with the manager over the last few days. I was impressed by his enthusiasm but also by his knowledge of football,” Eto’o added.
As Eto’o settles in at Goodison Park, fans will be keen to see how the veteran striker adapts to life in the Premier League and whether his new squad number heralds a fresh approach on the pitch.
