Cameroon football icon Samuel Eto’o has been urged to seek a second term as president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot). During the federation’s Ordinary General Assembly held on November 16, 2024, at the CAF Center of Excellence in Mbankomo, delegates unanimously voiced their support for the former FC Barcelona and Inter Milan star to continue his leadership beyond his current term, which ends in December 2025.
The assembly praised Eto’o’s efforts in transforming Cameroonian football since taking office in 2021.
Delegates highlighted his initiatives to modernize the sport, which have included substantial improvements in infrastructure, enhanced support for local leagues, and the nurturing of young talents.
According to Actu Cameroun, the assembly members collectively expressed their desire for the football legend to maintain his position and build on his accomplishments.
“We want him to keep working towards advancing our football. His vision has brought hope and progress to the game in Cameroon,” said one delegate during the assembly.
Eto’o’s presidency has been marked by ambitious reforms, many of which have revitalized Cameroonian football.
Under his leadership, new investment has been channeled into sports infrastructure, grassroots football has seen renewed focus, and the domestic leagues have received better organization and funding.
These efforts have resonated with fans and football stakeholders alike, who view Eto’o as a pivotal figure in driving the sport’s resurgence in the country.
Despite these strides, challenges remain. Legal disputes and internal disagreements within Fecafoot have occasionally disrupted progress.
A notable example is the ongoing conflict with former national team coach Antonio Conceição, which threatens the federation’s stability.
Critics argue that resolving these issues will be crucial for Eto’o to solidify his legacy and maintain the momentum of his reforms.
The unanimous call for Eto’o to seek re-election underscores the confidence that the football community has in his leadership.
The 43-year-old, widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, has yet to publicly respond to the invitation.
Should he choose to run, he will likely face high expectations to further elevate Cameroonian football on both domestic and international stages.
The coming months will reveal whether Eto’o will accept the challenge to extend his tenure at the helm of Fecafoot, continuing his mission to transform the game in his homeland.
