Samuel Eto’o, the legendary Cameroonian striker, has certainly led a globetrotting career, having played in Spain, Italy, Russia, England, and most recently Turkey. Along the way, Eto’o has become known for his linguistic talents, speaking multiple languages, although his time in Russia presented significant challenges when it came to learning Russian.
Rebecca Prew, a graduate in French-Russian translation from the University of Leeds, was hired to teach Eto’o during his time with Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. In an interview with Eurosport, Prew revealed that she was unaware of Eto’o’s fame when she was selected for the role, and she believed that the club had specifically chosen her because of her impartiality.
However, Eto’o’s time in Russia was far from smooth when it came to language lessons. Prew described him as “horrible” in terms of his language learning, even mentioning that he displayed signs of having an “attention deficit disorder.” Despite his struggles with Russian, Eto’o’s extravagant lifestyle left an impression on his teacher.

She further revealed that Eto’o would pay her in cash, dipping into a wallet that was reportedly “overflowing with 500 euro, 100 euro, and 50 euro notes.”
Now in Turkey, Eto’o faces a new linguistic challenge as he continues his football journey with Turkish club Konyaspor. With his experience and career behind him, it will be interesting to see how Eto’o adjusts to his new environment while navigating the Turkish language.
