Samuel Eto’o, the iconic former striker of Barcelona and Inter Milan, now serving as the president of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), finds himself embroiled in a storm of controversy as he navigates the dual roles of leadership and ambition.
Since his election to the helm of Fecafoot on December 12, 2021, Eto’o has been a polarizing figure in Cameroon, eliciting both admiration and criticism for his leadership style and aspirations.
Initially hailed as a catalyst for change within the federation, his tenure has been marred by escalating controversies and concerns surrounding the Cameroonian national team.
Amid allegations of misconduct and suspicions of match-fixing, an investigation was launched by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), casting a shadow over Eto’o’s stewardship.
The recent elimination of the Indomitable Lions in the round of 16 of the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast further intensified scrutiny on Eto’o’s leadership.
In response to mounting pressure, Eto’o tendered his resignation to the executive committee of Fecafoot following the team’s disappointing performance.
However, his resignation was promptly rejected, prolonging the saga surrounding his presidency.
Critics, including former Indomitable Lions midfielder André Kana-Biyik, have lambasted Eto’o for what they perceive as an exercise of unchecked power and an inflated ego.
Kana-Biyik laments the lack of progress under Eto’o’s leadership, attributing it to the president’s refusal to heed advice and collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
“He has an oversized ego, does as he pleases, doesn’t listen to anyone and doesn’t get good advice,” remarked Kana-Biyik in an interview with Le Monde.
He further criticized Eto’o’s apparent desire to assume both presidential and coaching duties, a move that has raised eyebrows and fueled speculation about conflicts of interest within the federation.
As Eto’o grapples with mounting dissent and calls for accountability, the future of Fecafoot and Cameroonian football hangs in the balance, with stakeholders anxiously awaiting resolution and a path forward that prioritizes transparency and progress.

Il a un ego surdimensionné, n’en fait qu’à sa tête, n’écoute personne et n’est pas bien… pic.twitter.com/znAb8RtGep
