Samuel Eto’o Set for Friendly Debut with Antalyaspor Against Marseille
Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o is wasting no time as he begins a new chapter in his illustrious career. Just days after being officially presented by Antalyaspor, the former Indomitable Lions captain is preparing to make his first appearance for the Turkish side in a high-profile pre-season friendly against Olympique de Marseille.
According to an announcement on Marseille’s official website, Eto’o and Antalyaspor will step in to replace Real Betis as the French club’s opponent in the Afyon Cup on Saturday, July 25, 2015. The tournament, hosted in the Turkish city of Afyonkarahisar, will see the two clubs face off as part of their preparations for the new season.
Eto’o joins Antalyaspor, based in the southern coastal city of Antalya, following a brief stint with Sampdoria in Italy. The 34-year-old forward now embarks on the 11th club of his remarkable 18-year career. Coached by Samet Aybaba, Antalyaspor is looking to strengthen its squad with the experience and firepower of the four-time African Player of the Year.
A seasoned goal-scorer with an illustrious CV—including successful spells at Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea—Eto’o is expected to bring leadership and star power to the newly-promoted Turkish Süper Lig club.
For Marseille, the encounter offers a valuable test against experienced opposition. For Eto’o, it marks the start of what could be another exciting and influential chapter in one of African football’s most decorated careers.
