Samir Chergui’s fighting spirit captures Algerian hearts
It has taken Samir Chergui only a few days to become one of Algeria’s new fan favourites.
The Paris FC defender, who recently joined the national setup, has made a powerful impression both on and off the pitch, quickly earning admiration for his grit, energy, and unflinching commitment.
Not initially among the most anticipated of Vladimir Petkovic’s recent call-ups, the 26-year-old has emerged as one of the standout figures in the squad.
During Algeria’s latest training sessions, Chergui’s intensity and physical presence set him apart from more established teammates such as Luca Zidane, Rafik Belghali, and Mehdi Dorval.
His assertive approach, sharp defensive instincts, and vocal leadership instantly caught the eye of both coaching staff and supporters.
That same determination was on full display during Algeria’s 2-1 victory over Uganda in the final round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Ugandan forward Denis Omedi was on the receiving end of Chergui’s robust defending, an encounter that underscored the Paris FC player’s no-nonsense style and fierce competitiveness.
Chergui’s warrior-like mentality has not gone unnoticed among his teammates either.
Goalkeeper Alexis Guendouz took to Instagram to share a playful tribute to the defender, posting a photo montage captioned: Chergui my soldier, accompanied by laughter and salute emojis. The post quickly went viral among Algerian supporters, further cementing Chergui’s growing popularity.
Off the pitch, his authenticity and humility have also struck a chord with fans.
During the national team’s visit to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who congratulated the Fennecs on securing World Cup qualification after an 11-year absence, Chergui’s down-to-earth reaction captured hearts.
It’s an honor to meet the President of the Republic, he told reporters in the mixed zone. Every time, I see him on TV. Seeing him in real life is crazy.
Born in Arpajon, France, and a product of AJ Auxerre’s academy, Chergui has built a reputation as a versatile and committed defender.
Standing at 1.85m, his blend of physical strength, positional awareness, and leadership has made him a valuable asset for both club and country.
With his recent performances and the affection he has inspired among Algerian supporters, Chergui looks set to earn a place in Petkovic’s upcoming squad for the November preparation matches ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
For Algeria, Chergui the soldier may have just begun writing his story.
Une question ? Il était où pendant tous ce temps l’arbitre ?
C’est bien sergent Chergui 😂
