Samir Chergui, Algeria’s 26-year-old defender, stole the spotlight during the national team’s recent friendly against Saudi Arabia at Prince Abdullah Al Faysal Stadium.

Chergui impressed fans and pundits with his defensive solidity and commitment, delivering one of his best performances in an Algeria shirt. The most memorable moment came in the 13th minute, when he executed a decisive goal-line clearance to deny Saudi Arabia an almost-certain goal.

Chergui’s rise has not been easy. He began as an attacking midfielder at CS Brétigny, before moving back to central and right defense to leverage his technical quality and confidence in advancing the play. His career took him to AJ Auxerre, where he signed his first professional contract but parted ways in 2020 after disciplinary incidents.

He then rebuilt his career at Paris FC, debuting professionally in 2021 and finally earning a Ligue 1 appearance in September 2025. Chergui’s persistence and versatility helped him evolve, and his standout performance proved he’s ready for a bigger role in Algeria’s defense, giving fans hope ahead of future matches.
