Sami Al-Jaber backs Ruben Neves after abusive chants at Al Taawoun match

Al Hilal legend Sami Al-Jaber has offered his support to Ruben Neves after the Portugal international was subjected to abusive chants during the club’s match against Al Taawoun.

Al-Jaber broke his silence hours after the incident, using a message posted on his official Instagram account to stress that the behaviour was an isolated act and did not represent the true values of Saudi sport or society.

Addressing Neves directly, the former Al Hilal forward underlined the importance of having a player of the midfielder’s quality in Saudi football. He also sought to reassure the 27-year-old that the incident did not reflect the way he is viewed by the wider Saudi football community.

Al-Jaber said respect and hospitality were deeply rooted in Saudi Arabia’s religion and culture. He described those principles as more than slogans, saying they were a way of life reflected in the welcome given to everyone who chooses the Kingdom as their home.

He added that such values stood above the intensity of sporting rivalry and the temporary emotions that can surface in the stands.

The former Saudi Arabia international was clear that the treatment Neves received could not be regarded as representative of Saudi values in any way. He said the midfielder held a special and exceptional place among Saudi supporters, who had appreciated his contribution and commitment since his arrival in the country.

Al-Jaber ended his message by expressing hope that Neves would recognise the scale of the welcome he had received after moving to Saudi Arabia. He also highlighted the sense of belonging the player had developed within the country’s sporting community.

The Al Hilal great said the incident should be viewed as a passing cloud that could not erase the relationship of mutual respect built during Neves’ two seasons of outstanding performances and loyalty.
