Dayot Upamecano seeks improved terms in Bayern Munich contract talks

Bayern Munich’s efforts to secure Dayot Upamecano’s long-term future have hit a stumbling block, with negotiations over a contract extension slowed by disagreements surrounding salary demands.

Discussions are ongoing between the Bundesliga champions and the French defender, whose current deal is approaching its final phase. The 27-year-old has been a regular starter under Vincent Kompany, and his representatives have outlined clear financial expectations as talks continue.

Upamecano is reportedly seeking a base salary of €16 million per year, with the potential to earn an additional €2 million in bonuses. Meeting those terms would see him become Bayern’s highest-paid central defender. The negotiations have also included talks over a sizeable signing-on fee, believed to be around €20 million, a figure comparable to recent contracts handed to Alphonso Davies and Jonathan Tah.

Another sensitive point in the discussions is the inclusion of a release clause. Reports suggest the clause could be set at €65 million and become active from the second year of a renewed contract.

While Bayern have traditionally been reluctant to agree to such clauses, exceptions have previously been made for players including Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane.

Should an agreement fail to materialise before the end of the year, Upamecano would be free to open talks with other suitors, with clubs such as Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool reportedly monitoring the situation.

Despite the current impasse, Bayern remain confident of a positive outcome, with sporting director Max Eberl stating on Sunday that he remains “very optimistic” about reaching an agreement.
