Saint-Étienne Push to Extend Max Gradel’s Contract Amid Interest
By BBC News Staff
AS Saint-Étienne are looking to secure the future of Ivorian international Max Gradel, with contract extension talks reportedly progressing in recent days. The 26-year-old winger, whose current deal expires in June, could soon follow in the footsteps of key teammates Stéphane Ruffier and Loïc Perrin by committing his future to the club.
Gradel, a regular under manager Christophe Galtier since joining the Ligue 1 side in 2011, has become a key figure at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. With 15 goals in 75 league appearances, and already off the mark this season, the former Leeds United man remains a crucial attacking threat for Les Verts.
The urgency surrounding Gradel’s contract situation stems from the risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer. Club officials are eager to finalise terms in the coming weeks to avoid that outcome—and if a deal is reached, it could guarantee Saint-Étienne some form of compensation should Gradel eventually depart.
Capped 21 times by Ivory Coast, Gradel has established himself as a consistent performer for both club and country. His pace, work rate, and eye for goal have made him a fan favourite and a valuable asset within Galtier’s system.
While talks are ongoing, both parties are understood to be optimistic. If agreed, the extension would mark another step in Saint-Étienne’s effort to build stability and retain their core players as they aim to push further up the Ligue 1 standings.
