Congolese side Saint-Éloi Lupopo have been dealt a major setback ahead of their CAF Champions League match against Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday.

Despite sitting at the bottom of their group, Lupopo still have a chance of reaching the knockout stage, but they will be without key defender Jonathan Mokonzi.

The centre-back suffered a severe leg injury during their recent clash with MC Alger, fracturing both the tibia and fibula in his right leg.

“The management of FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo wishes to update supporters, partners, and the public on the medical condition of our central defender, Jonathan Mokonzi,” the club said in a statement.

“Following a heavy challenge in the match against MC Alger, emergency radiological examinations revealed a closed fracture of both bones in his right leg. To ensure optimal recovery, a surgical operation is scheduled for Monday, February 2, at a specialized hospital in Algiers. The club has enlisted top local medical experts to oversee the procedure.”

The club reassured fans and the player’s family that Mokonzi is in good hands and remains in high spirits.

“We are committed to supporting his full recovery and eventual return to the pitch,” the statement added.

Supporters have been urged to send positive messages ahead of the surgery.
