Bayal Sall Slams Saint-Étienne Teammates After Costly Defeat to Bastia
Senegalese defender Moustapha Bayal Sall has voiced his frustration following AS Saint-Étienne’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to SC Bastia, a result that has jeopardised the club’s hopes of qualifying for European competition next season.
With just three matches remaining in the Ligue 1 campaign, the loss leaves Les Verts in fifth place—still in the hunt for a continental spot, but now under increased pressure. Speaking to Le Progrès, Bayal Sall did not mince his words, criticising what he sees as a lack of commitment and fighting spirit from his teammates.
“Some people forgot it was going to be a tough match,” said the 29-year-old. “The coach warned us that our opponents would provoke us, insult us, call us names. But we weren’t ready for that.”
The veteran centre-back, known for his no-nonsense defending and vocal presence on the pitch, was clearly dismayed by what he viewed as a disjointed and passive performance.
“We didn’t know how to respond, we didn’t play,” he continued. “Some players aren’t making enough effort for the team. At this club, you have to be a warrior. That’s what we lacked.”
Bayal Sall’s comments reflect the growing tension within the squad as Saint-Étienne fights to secure a Europa League berth. While the defender did not single out any individuals, his blunt assessment is likely to spark reactions in the dressing room as the team regroups for its final matches.
Manager Christophe Galtier has repeatedly stressed the importance of unity and resilience in the closing stages of the season, but Bayal Sall’s remarks suggest not all players are on the same page.
Saint-Étienne’s next fixtures will be crucial in determining their European fate. Whether Bayal Sall’s criticism galvanises the squad or further disrupts team cohesion remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—the margin for error is now razor-thin.
