SAFA president Danny Jordaan eyes Hugo Broos continuity after 2026 World Cup
The future of Hugo Broos at the helm of South Africa national football team could take an unexpected twist, with the South African Football Association (SAFA) determined to open talks aimed at convincing him to stay beyond this year’s FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Belgian tactician has repeatedly stated that he intends to step down as Bafana Bafana head coach after the global tournament in June. However, SAFA president Danny Jordaan has revealed that the association plans to engage Broos over all available options — including extending his stay.
South Africa have been drawn in a challenging Group A alongside South Korea, Mexico and another nation yet to be confirmed, and SAFA believes stability on the bench could prove vital both during and after the tournament.
Jordaan emphasized the importance of breaking from a long-standing culture of short-term coaching appointments.
“Never in the history of South Africa did you have a coach stay the course of their contract,” Jordaan said. “Coaches must be given the opportunity to settle the team, scan the land and decide which players are suitable for my team.”
The SAFA boss admitted that frequent changes in leadership have disrupted the national team’s long-term progress, insisting that continuity is now a key priority.
“This is one problem we realise. This cannot continue. We must give stability to the coaching staff,” he added.
Broos has been widely credited with restoring structure and belief within Bafana Bafana, guiding the team through a rebuilding phase and fostering a competitive spirit that has reignited hopes among supporters.
With the World Cup on the horizon, SAFA’s push for continuity signals a shift in approach — one that prioritizes long-term development over short-term fixes. Whether Broos will reconsider his stance remains to be seen, but it is clear that South African football authorities are keen to keep the experienced Belgian at the wheel beyond the global showpiece.
