Senegal legend Sadio Mane has confirmed that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) marks the end of his journey with the Lions of Teranga in the tournament.
The former Liverpool star reiterated his decision on Sunday following Senegal’s thrilling 1-0 victory over Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations final at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Speaking to the “senenews” network after the final, Mane expressed his gratitude to his countrymen.
“First and foremost, I would like to thank all the people of Senegal. It wasn’t easy, but in the end, we achieved it together,” Mane said.
He added, “I am very happy, but as I said, for me, with the Africa Cup of Nations, everything is over. I will be with the team until the World Cup, and after that everything will be over.”
Mane also reflected on the dramatic moments of the final.
“Thank God for winning the title. I want to write my story in Africa after this title. What happened was that the coach and everyone decided to leave, and I didn’t understand what happened. I took some advice and told them that we must play, because it would be crazy to stop the match while the whole world is watching us,” he said.
