Former Cameroon national team coach Marc Brys has insisted that he still considers himself the head coach of the Indomitable Lions, despite his dismissal from the role before the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Cameroonian Football Federation, led by Samuel Eto’o, announced Brys’ removal just 20 days before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations, a decision that sparked widespread controversy.
The Belgian tactician maintains that the process of his dismissal has not been formally completed and, as a result, he continues to regard himself as Cameroon’s head coach.
“I still consider myself the coach of the Cameroonian national team, because I have not been dismissed yet,” Brys told Belgian television channel Sporza.
He added, “The federation does not have the right to dismiss me, even if it tries to do so several times. Only the president or the ministry can do that, because they are the ones who appointed me.”
Brys described the situation as unlawful and unprecedented, expressing frustration over the lack of communication surrounding the decision.
“The way things happened is illegal and illogical. You don’t see anything like this anywhere else in the world of football. The facts themselves are illegal. There was absolutely no communication. I hold them all responsible,” he added.
Amid the off-field uncertainty, Cameroon have progressed to the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations and are set to face hosts Morocco in a highly anticipated clash at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium on Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 20:00 GMT+1.
