Ryad Boudebouz is embarking on a new chapter of his career in Spain. Under contract with Real Betis until 2021, the Algerian international midfielder has been loaned to Celta Vigo for the remainder of the season, a move designed to give him more playing time and help the Galician club in its fight to remain in La Liga.
After struggling to secure regular minutes at Betis, Boudebouz did not hesitate when the opportunity to join Celta arose. In an interview with the local newspaper Atlántico Diario, relayed by DZfoot, the 29-year-old spoke candidly about his objectives and his early adaptation to life at his new club. “I play to contribute to the team, to make the most of the playing time I’m given, and to help the club get out of this situation,” he explained, clearly focused on collective success rather than personal statistics.
Boudebouz has settled in quickly at Celta Vigo, both on and off the pitch. The Algerian midfielder highlighted the importance of feeling comfortable in his environment in order to perform at his best. “Now that I know everyone, I feel comfortable in the group, with the coach, in the city… and that means a lot to me,” he said. “I need to feel good where I play to reach my best level. My teammates help me a lot too.” This sense of belonging appears to be paying off, as Boudebouz has gradually found his rhythm and confidence.
Reflecting on his decision to leave Betis temporarily, the former Montpellier playmaker expressed no regrets. “It was a good decision to come here. I knew I could play more than at Betis,” he admitted. “Little by little, things are going well for me and for the team.” At Celta, Boudebouz has been given greater responsibility in the attacking phases, using his vision, technical quality, and experience to influence games in tight situations.
Beyond the present season, the Algerian international remains cautious about his future. While his loan deal does not include a clear long-term outcome, Boudebouz insists that his priority is Celta Vigo’s survival in the top flight. “I don’t know if I’ll return to Betis,” he said, “but if I do, I want to leave Celta with the team in the first division.” His commitment is evident: “For me, it’s very important. I’m not here just to get playing time. I’m going to do everything I can to keep Celta in La Liga.”
Boudebouz joined Real Betis in 2017 from Montpellier for a fee of €7 million. Trained at FC Sochaux, he has also played for Bastia and built a solid reputation in Ligue 1, where he scored 45 goals over the course of his career. Known for his creativity, powerful left foot, and ability to unlock defenses, he remains a valuable asset at both club and international level.
As the season reaches its decisive phase, Ryad Boudebouz will be determined to play a key role in Celta Vigo’s fight for survival, while keeping one eye on what the future may hold beyond his loan spell.
