Rwanda Premier League approves $868,000 budget as Sudanese clubs join as guests

Rwanda’s BK Pro League has approved a budget of RWF 1.28 billion ($868,000) for the 2026/27 season, while Sudanese clubs have been granted permission to participate in the competition as guest teams.

The decision marks an unusual development for the Rwandan top flight, with Sudanese sides set to compete alongside Rwandan clubs despite not being eligible to claim the official league title.

Under the arrangements approved for the new season, a Sudanese club that finishes top of the league standings will be presented with an honorary trophy.

However, the official BK Pro League championship trophy will be awarded to the highest-placed Rwandan club.

The guest teams will nevertheless be fully involved in the competition and will be eligible to earn match bonuses and individual awards during the season.

The participation of Sudanese clubs is also subject to specific squad restrictions. A Sudanese team will be allowed to field a maximum of six non-Sudanese players at any one time, while up to eight non-Sudanese players can be included on the match sheet.

The regulations are designed to distinguish the guest teams from the Rwandan clubs while allowing them to compete meaningfully across the season.

The approved RWF 1.28 billion budget, equivalent to about $868,000, provides the financial framework for the 2026/27 campaign and comes as Rwanda continues to develop its domestic football competitions.

The inclusion of Sudanese clubs could add a new dimension to the league, offering the teams an opportunity to remain competitive while Sudanese football continues to face challenges that have affected domestic competitions.

For the Rwandan clubs, the arrangement means the race for the official league championship will remain exclusively among domestic sides, even if a Sudanese guest team finishes at the top of the overall standings.

The highest-ranked Rwandan club will therefore be recognised as the official champion and will receive the league’s main trophy.

The move could also provide Sudanese players and clubs with valuable competitive football while potentially exposing the Rwandan league to a wider pool of talent and supporters.

With the 2026/27 season approaching, attention will now turn to how the guest arrangement works in practice and whether the participation of Sudanese clubs can contribute to the growth and competitiveness of the BK Pro League.
