Russia goalkeeper Stanislav Agkatsev relishes Cairo atmosphere despite defeat to Egypt
Russia goalkeeper Stanislav Agkatsev admitted he enjoyed the atmosphere at Cairo International Stadium despite his side’s narrow defeat to Egypt in Thursday’s international friendly.
The Pharaohs secured a 1-0 victory over Russia in a warm-up match as both teams continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Agkatsev, who plays for Russian club Krasnodar, described the encounter as one of the most exciting matches he has experienced in recent years, while praising both teams for their intensity throughout the game.
“It was an interesting match, perhaps one of the most exciting games in recent years,” the goalkeeper said after the final whistle.
“Unfortunately we did not win, but I think the players gave everything they had even if the result did not go our way.”
The Russian shot-stopper also spoke about the unique experience of playing an away match with the national team, revealing that all his previous appearances for Russia had come on home soil.
“I have never played abroad with the national team before, so this experience was something different and very interesting for me,” he added.
Agkatsev highlighted the passionate atmosphere inside Cairo Stadium, although he admitted there were moments that made his task more difficult during the match.
“The atmosphere was unusual, but I really enjoyed it. There were difficult moments because of the laser lights directed at my eyes, but overall it was a special experience,” he explained.
“The culture of the fans here is different from what we are used to in Russia.”
The goalkeeper also praised the support from travelling Russian fans, saying their voices could be heard clearly throughout the evening.
“I heard the Russian supporters before the match, during the warm-up and throughout the game. Their support meant a lot to us and I thank everyone who came to cheer for the team.”
Agkatsev further noted that both goalkeepers remained fully focused throughout the contest despite the limited number of clear-cut chances.
“There were attacking and defensive moments for both sides. Maybe there were not many dangerous shots, but we always had to stay concentrated,” he concluded.
