Rulani Mokwena guides Al-Ittihad to strong start in Libya

Al-Ittihad have continued their strong domestic form under new coach Rulani Mokwena after a 2-0 win over Al Tersana in the Libyan Premier League on Wednesday.

The result strengthens the club’s position at the top of the table, where the 18-time champions now sit 10 points clear with 38 points from 14 matches, underlining their dominance so far this season.

Since his arrival from Algerian champions MC Alger last month, Mokwena has made an immediate impact, winning all three of his opening matches in charge of the Libyan side.

His tenure began with a commanding 4-1 victory over Abu Salim in the Libyan Cup, before following it up with another 4-1 win against Shabab Al Ghar in the league.

The latest result against Al Tersana has extended that perfect run and reinforced early optimism around his appointment.

Al-Ittihad are now turning their attention to their next fixture on Monday, when they host Elettihad, who currently sit third in the standings.

The match is expected to be another important step in their bid to secure a first league title since the 2021/22 season.

Mokwena will also be hoping to welcome back key attacker Thembinkosi Lorch, who has missed the last two matches due to injury.

The South African forward, formerly of Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, is said to have suffered a minor setback but is expected to return to action in the coming weeks.

With momentum building and results continuing to go their way, Al-Ittihad’s strong start under Mokwena has placed them in a commanding position in the title race, while also raising expectations among supporters that the club can maintain its lead through the remainder of the campaign.
