Ruben Amorim needs time at Manchester United, says Kenya coach Benni McCarthy
Former Manchester United coach Benni McCarthy has called for patience with current manager Ruben Amorim, insisting the Portuguese tactician needs more time to mould the team into his vision.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November 2024 after leaving Sporting CP, has endured a rocky start to life at Old Trafford.
United slumped to a 15th-place finish last season, their lowest in the Premier League era, a campaign that triggered widespread criticism from fans and pundits.
This season has brought little relief. After five matches, United have registered just two wins, one draw, and two defeats, sparking doubts over Amorim’s ability to steady the club.
McCarthy, who worked as a striker coach under Ten Hag before taking over as head coach of Kenya, believes Amorim deserves the backing of the board and supporters.
“He is a part of the best out of this new generation (of managers) that is just coming out after what he has achieved at Sporting Lisbon,” McCarthy, who is the current head coach of Kenya said, as quoted by Mozzartsport.
“I think if they give him time, if they give him what he wants, he can bring in the players he wants to bring.
“There are no easy games, so you can’t guarantee that he will win like in the past when United had a golden era when Fergie (Ferguson) was in charge and teams looked a little bit easy and United had a solid team that knew what winning was about,” he added.
United will be aiming to build on their modest momentum when they travel to Brentford this weekend.
