South Africa captain Ronwen Williams has eulogized Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso following the teams’ qualification to the semifinals of the CAF Champions League this season.
The South African giants are in the semifinals for the second time running after triumphing over Tunisian side Esperance 1-0 on aggregate, setting up a crucial encounter against giants Al Ahly.
However, Williams, who is the captain of the South Africa national team has highlighted Cardoso’s analytical role in the sides’ success over Esperance.
“The coach gave us all the details about how they play, their strengths and weaknesses. We knew it was a marginal game, and that’s exactly what happened.” He said.
Williams then commended the overall performance of the team after booking a slot in the last four of the CAF’s elite club competition.
“This game was one of the best, because of the team’s desire and determination to give everything. It’s not easy to come to Tunisia and win.”
“When we beat them in the first leg, we changed the history, because we had never beaten them before. So I felt that this year could be our year” he said.
Mamelodi Sundowns will play to Al Ahly in the first leg of the crucial semifinals clash on April 19 before traveling to face the Egyptian giants at the Cairo International Stadium a week later.
The 33-year-old goalkeeper has been outstanding for Mamelodi Sundowns this season, making 58 appearances, conceding 30 goals and keeping 34 clean sheets.
