Ronaldo, Messi and football’s goal kings build new careers beyond Europe

None of the five highest-scoring active players in football history currently plays in a European league, highlighting the growing trend of established stars finishing their careers overseas.

Europe remains the centre of the sport’s competitive landscape. Most of the world’s leading players are still based in European leagues, and the clubs involved in European competitions attract the largest global audiences.

However, the movement of legendary players away from the continent has become increasingly common, with several of the game’s greatest goalscorers choosing to spend the latter stages of their careers in Saudi Arabia or the United States.

The shift has been accelerated by the changing transfer market. Since the landmark Bosman ruling on 15 December 1995, which eased restrictions on clubs signing foreign players, teams in Europe’s leading leagues have dominated the market for elite talent.

Yet none of the top five active scorers in football history now plays in Europe.

Cristiano Ronaldo leads the all-time list after moving beyond Josef Bican to become the highest scorer in official matches. The Portugal forward is currently targeting 1,000 career goals and has scored 976 to date, with his latest milestone coming after converting a penalty against Croatia at the World Cup.

Ronaldo has played in the Saudi Pro League since January 2022, when he joined Al Nassr.

Lionel Messi is second in the all-time rankings with 921 goals. His most recent two goals came against Atletico San Luis in the League Cup.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has been based in Major League Soccer since 2023, when he moved to Inter Miami rather than continuing his career in Europe.

Robert Lewandowski is seventh overall and third among players still active, with 721 goals. The Poland striker continued to score for Barcelona before also finding the net for his new club, Chicago Fire, in Major League Soccer.

Luis Suarez, Messi’s team-mate at Inter Miami, is fourth among active players and 14th in the overall rankings. The Uruguay forward has scored 610 goals during a career that began more than 20 years ago and has included spells at some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Karim Benzema completes the top five active scorers. The France striker has played in Saudi Arabia since the summer of 2023 and currently represents Al-Hilal.

Benzema has scored 523 goals in 993 matches, leaving him one goal ahead of Harry Kane. The England captain is the first player in the rankings who remains in Europe, playing for Bayern Munich under manager Vincent Kompany.

The figures underline how the final chapters of the careers of football’s most prolific active forwards are increasingly being written outside the continent traditionally regarded as the sport’s strongest home.

Ronaldo’s pursuit of 1,000 goals is continuing in Saudi Arabia, while Messi, Suarez and Lewandowski are all active in the United States. Benzema is also competing in Saudi Arabia, leaving Kane as the only member of the leading group still playing in one of Europe’s major leagues.
