Ronald Araujo sends emotional message to Barcelona fans after Liverpool loan move

Ronald Araujo has thanked Barcelona supporters after completing a season-long loan move to Liverpool, saying he is ready to take on a “new challenge” after eight years with the Catalan club.

Liverpool announced the signing of the Barcelona defender on Tuesday, with the Uruguay international joining for the 2026-27 season. Neither club mentioned a purchase option in the official announcement, although reports say Liverpool have the right to sign Araujo permanently for 55m euros.

The 27-year-old is waiting for a work permit before he can join up with Arne Slot’s squad. Liverpool are short of defensive options because of injuries, and Araujo is expected to have a significant role as the club prepares for the start of the Premier League season.

Araujo posted a message to Barcelona supporters on Instagram after the move was confirmed.

“It is time to take on a new challenge. After eight years, I take with me many, many beautiful memories, and the lessons I have learned,” he wrote.

“Above all, there are many people who were part of this journey. I will always be grateful to you, Culers.”

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Araujo said he was eager to begin the next stage of his career.

“I can’t wait to start my career here, I’m very happy,” he said.

“I’m excited to play for this great club with its history, and excited to meet my team-mates. I’m eager to get involved.”

He added: “I think this was the perfect step at this stage of my career and it was a step I needed. As soon as I heard about Liverpool’s interest, everything moved very quickly.”

“I’m happy to be here and excited to start. It was the right move at the right time,” Araujo said.

The defender has moved to Anfield after accepting that his opportunities at Barcelona could decrease during the new season. He had lost his regular starting place over the past two campaigns amid a decline in form, prompting him to look for a fresh opportunity elsewhere.

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick said Araujo understood that a change was needed.

“Araujo is a great player and an outstanding person, and he understood that he needed a new challenge,” said Flick.

“I saw him happy before he travelled, and I wish him all the best in his next step.”

Araujo joined Barcelona from Boston River in 2018 and wore the club’s captain’s armband during the past two seasons. He made 35 appearances for Barcelona last season and scored four goals.

His arrival gives Liverpool further defensive cover as they deal with injuries and seek to strengthen their squad before the Premier League campaign begins. The loan agreement runs for one season, while reports indicate that a permanent transfer could follow if Liverpool choose to activate the 55m-euro clause.
