Romero celebrates Atletico Madrid derby win after Real Madrid controversy

Christian Romero has celebrated Atletico Madrid’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the seventh round of La Liga, insisting the three points were fully deserved despite the controversy surrounding the derby.

The Atletico Madrid defender wrote on Instagram: “Pride, effort and a huge heart from this team… Madrid is red and white.”

The Argentina international added: “Atletico Madrid always moving forward.”

Romero also appeared to reference the debate over the refereeing decisions during the match, urging supporters not to be distracted by the controversy.

“Do not let anyone try to distract you. The three points were completely deserved,” he wrote.

The defender was central to one of the main talking points in the derby after making a strong challenge on Real Madrid forward Jude Bellingham during the first half.

The referee showed Romero a yellow card for the tackle in the 38th minute, rather than sending him off.

Speaking at his post-match news conference, Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho said Romero should have been dismissed for the challenge on Bellingham’s knee.

Mourinho also argued that Kang-in Lee should have been sent off for a tackle on Federico Valverde’s ankle.

Despite the reaction to those decisions, Romero used his social media post to focus on Atletico Madrid’s performance and their victory over their city rivals.
