Romelu Lukaku insists ‘I’d never turn my back on Napoli’ amid row

Romelu Lukaku has moved to calm tensions with Napoli after reports suggested his future at the club was under threat following a controversial decision to remain in Belgium for treatment.

The striker drew criticism from within Napoli’s hierarchy after opting not to return to Italy last week, choosing instead to continue rehabilitation on a lingering hip problem in his home country.

The move sparked speculation of a breakdown in relations between player and club at a crucial stage of the season.

However, Lukaku addressed the situation directly in a statement posted on Instagram on Sunday night, offering clarity on both his physical condition and intentions.

“This season has been very difficult for me, between the injury and the personal loss. I know there’s been a lot of noise about my situation in recent days, and it’s important to clarify the whole situation,” he wrote.

The Belgian forward revealed that further medical checks conducted in Belgium confirmed inflammation and fluid build-up around his hip flexor, close to existing scar tissue. The issue marks a recurrence of a problem he first encountered after returning to action in early November.

“I chose to rehab in Belgium so I can be of assistance when I’m called upon,” Lukaku explained, pushing back against suggestions that his absence was an act of defiance.

The 32-year-old was also keen to reaffirm his commitment to Napoli, dismissing any notion that he had distanced himself from the club during his recovery period.

“I could never turn my back on Napoli, ever,” he stated.

Lukaku acknowledged the toll his injury struggles have taken beyond the physical aspect, admitting that inconsistent fitness has also affected him mentally during what he described as a demanding year.

Despite the setback, he remains focused on returning at full capacity, stressing that his priority is to contribute meaningfully rather than rush back prematurely.

“There’s nothing I’d love to do more than play and win with my team, but right now I need to make sure I’m 100% fit,” he added.
