Roma’s Axel Disasi gamble could be Serie A’s bargain signing

AS Roma have been handed an opportunity to strengthen their defence at a relatively modest price, with Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi reportedly available for around €20 million in what could prove to be one of the bargains of the summer transfer window.

The French defender appears to have no long-term future at Stamford Bridge following Chelsea’s squad overhaul under new manager Xabi Alonso. After already sanctioning several arrivals and departures, Alonso is reshaping his squad, and Disasi is among the players expected to move on before the start of the 2026/27 season.

For Roma, the timing could hardly be better. With Gian Piero Gasperini seeking experienced reinforcements, Disasi offers a blend of Premier League pedigree, physicality and leadership at a fee significantly below what clubs would normally expect to pay for a defender of his profile.

Strong defensive numbers make compelling case

Although Disasi spent the latter part of last season on loan at West Ham United, his performances suggested he still possesses qualities capable of thriving at the highest level.

Across 17 Premier League appearances, the 28-year-old consistently delivered in key defensive metrics. His tackle success rate of 68.75% ranked among the best in the West Ham squad, underlining his effectiveness in one-on-one defensive situations.

He also registered 74 ground clearances and 40 headed clearances despite playing only 1,510 minutes, while winning 48 of his 77 ground duels for an impressive success rate of 62.34%.

In the air, Disasi remained equally reliable, winning 25 of his 42 aerial duels, reinforcing his reputation as a commanding presence inside the penalty area.

Perhaps even more impressive was his ability to recover possession, regaining the ball on 43 occasions despite limited playing time—an indication of both his defensive awareness and reading of the game.

More than just a traditional centre-back

Disasi’s qualities extend beyond physical defending. Comfortable in possession, he recorded an 86.06% pass completion rate during his spell with West Ham, highlighting his ability to build attacks from the back.

His composure on the ball and willingness to carry possession into midfield make him an ideal fit for teams looking to play through defensive lines rather than simply clearing danger.

Those attributes align well with the demands of modern football and could suit Gasperini’s tactical approach should Roma complete the deal.

At €20 million, the investment carries relatively little financial risk for a player who combines international experience with several seasons in top European competitions.

Weaknesses Roma must consider

Disasi is not without flaws, however.

His biggest vulnerability comes when defending wide areas. The Frenchman is most comfortable operating centrally and can struggle when dragged into one-on-one situations against quick wingers.

His turning speed has also been questioned, particularly when opponents play balls over the top or when defensive lines push high up the pitch. Those limitations mean Roma would need to structure their defensive system carefully to maximise his strengths while limiting his exposure in transition.

Even so, those shortcomings appear manageable given the transfer fee being discussed.

Roma may need to move fast

Interest from Crystal Palace could complicate negotiations, meaning Roma cannot afford to delay if they are serious about securing the defender’s signature.

For Chelsea, a permanent sale would help trim a bloated squad while allowing Alonso to continue reshaping his team.

For Roma, meanwhile, the numbers suggest Disasi represents excellent value. Experienced centre-backs with proven credentials in Europe’s top leagues rarely become available for €20 million.
