Roma move for Chelsea outcast Axel Disasi as Serie A giants make enquiry

AS Roma have stepped up their search for defensive reinforcements by making an enquiry for Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi, according to reports.

The Serie A club are exploring the possibility of signing the French defender, who is expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer after falling out of favour under Chelsea’s plans.

Foot Mercato reports that Roma have already contacted both Chelsea and the player’s representatives to assess the conditions of a potential transfer. Chelsea are understood to value the 28-year-old at around €20 million.

Chelsea exit edges closer

Disasi has endured a difficult spell in west London since slipping down the pecking order. Last summer, he was among the group of players widely referred to as Chelsea’s “bomb squad” after being excluded from the senior setup while the club sought permanent exits for several fringe players.

Despite interest during the previous transfer window, the former Monaco defender remained at Chelsea and spent the first half of the campaign training with the club’s under-21 side.

A January loan move to West Ham United offered Disasi the chance to revive his career. The defender delivered several encouraging performances during his six-month spell, but he was unable to prevent the Hammers from suffering relegation.

Roma eye defensive experience

Roma’s enquiry signals their intent to add proven experience to their back line ahead of the new Serie A season.

Disasi’s top-level experience in both Ligue 1 and the Premier League, coupled with his international pedigree, makes him an attractive option for the Italian club as they assess defensive targets.

Chelsea, meanwhile, appear willing to sanction a permanent sale if their €20 million valuation is met, potentially bringing an end to Disasi’s frustrating stint at Stamford Bridge.

With Roma now making the first move, negotiations could gather pace in the coming days as the Italian side weigh up whether to formalise their interest with an official offer.
