Roma handed boost as Xavi says Donyell Malen injury is not serious

Roma have received encouraging news about Donyell Malen after the forward withdrew from the Netherlands squad with an injury, with national team manager Xavi Hernandez saying the problem is not serious.

Malen was included in the Netherlands squad for their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. The Oranje are in a group containing Germany, Serbia and Greece.

The Netherlands recently confirmed that Malen and Bournemouth forward Justin Kluivert would miss the forthcoming matches because of injury. Guus Til and Mexx Meerdink were called up as their replacements.

Speaking at a news conference, Xavi said Malen had been hurt during Roma’s match against Inter on Saturday.

“Donyell left the pitch injured during the Roma and Inter game on Saturday,” said the Netherlands manager.

“It is unfortunate because Donyell is going through a great period, but it happened at the last moment, just as it did with Kluivert. That is football, and you have to adapt.”

Asked about the nature of Malen’s injury, Xavi added: “I think Donyell is fine. The injury is not serious. I do not know how long he will need to recover.”

Malen’s withdrawal had caused concern among Roma supporters, particularly because of his impressive start to life at the club. He has scored six goals in five Serie A appearances.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Malen has a problem with his right knee which is believed to be no more than a strain.

Malen was not the only player to leave his national team’s training camp because of injury. Wesley withdrew from the Brazil squad with a muscle problem, while Bryan Cristante missed Italy’s squad for the same reason.

Roma are expected to use the international break to help Malen, Cristante and Wesley recover. The trio are expected to return to full team training during the break.

Malen has won 56 caps for the Netherlands and scored 13 goals since making his international debut in September 2019.

The Netherlands will face Germany, Serbia and Greece in the Nations League. Their first match under Xavi will be against Germany, which will also be Jurgen Klopp’s first game in charge of Germany.

Xavi took over as Netherlands manager after Ronald Koeman was dismissed following the team’s most recent World Cup disappointment. The 2026 World Cup was held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Netherlands were eliminated in the round of 32 by Morocco after a 1-1 draw, losing the subsequent penalty shootout.
