Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and manager Jose Mourinho were reportedly left furious after Manchester City midfielder Rodri rejected a move to the Spanish club before subsequently reaching an agreement with Barcelona.

The reported reaction presents a different version of events from earlier coverage, which suggested Real Madrid had accepted Rodri’s decision calmly and without significant concern. The contrasting accounts have created uncertainty over how the decision was received within the upper levels of the Santiago Bernabeu club.

Rodri, regarded as a major Manchester City star, initially turned down the opportunity to join Real Madrid. He later chose a different route and agreed to move to Barcelona, a development that was allegedly met with considerable disappointment inside Real Madrid.

The first account of the club’s response was described as measured. Foot Mercato, citing AS, reported that Real Madrid understood and respected Rodri’s choice and wished the Spain international well in the direction he had selected.

That version suggested the club had no intention of escalating the situation. According to the report, Real Madrid accepted that the player had made his decision and was prepared to move forward without publicly expressing frustration.

However, Sport newspaper has offered a substantially different narrative. It claims Perez was extremely angry that a transfer he considered effectively secured had not been completed. The report said the president had been persuaded by two trusted figures at the club, Jose Angel Sanchez and Juni Calafat, that the deal was under control.

Rodri’s eventual decision to agree with Barcelona therefore came as a major blow to Perez, according to Sport. The newspaper described the president’s frustration as particularly intense because he had believed the transfer was close to being settled.

The report also claimed Mourinho reacted with equally strong emotion when he learned that Real Madrid had lost the opportunity to sign Rodri. His alleged anger was presented as matching, and possibly rivaling, Perez’s frustration over the failed deal.

The two reports consequently portray very different responses from Real Madrid. The account attributed to AS depicts a club willing to respect Rodri’s choice and offer him its best wishes, while the version from Sport describes deep anger among the club’s most senior figures.

For Real Madrid, the disappointment was said to be connected not simply to the player choosing Barcelona, but to the belief that his transfer had already been secured. The involvement of Sanchez and Calafat in convincing Perez that the agreement was effectively complete is central to the latest account.

Rodri’s decision has thus produced a fresh debate over the reaction within Real Madrid, with public reports differing sharply over whether the club accepted the outcome with composure or viewed it as a serious failure in the transfer process.
