Rodri undergoes Barcelona medical as supporters greet Spain midfielder

Rodri has arrived at FC Barcelona’s Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper to undergo his medical before completing his move from Manchester City, with dozens of supporters gathering to give the Spain midfielder a rapturous welcome.

The 29-year-old reached the club’s training complex on Tuesday morning after fans had assembled outside the entrance from the early hours. They chanted his name for an extended period as he made his way inside for the routine examinations, footage of which was shared on social media.

Rodri’s medical is expected to be the final major step before Barcelona formally announce his signing. He will undergo a series of detailed medical and physical tests to confirm his fitness before moving to the club’s offices to complete the administrative process and sign his contract.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Rodri is due to agree a four-year contract with the Catalan club. Barcelona are scheduled to present him officially to the media and supporters at 13:00 local time on Tuesday.

The midfielder arrived in Barcelona on Monday evening after travelling from Manchester on a private aircraft that landed at El Prat Airport. He stopped to speak to the media waiting for him and made clear his enthusiasm for the move and Barcelona’s ambitions.

“Playing for Barcelona is a dream, we aim to win the Champions League, and to achieve everything that is to come,” Rodri said.

Barcelona have reached a final agreement with Manchester City for the transfer. The deal is worth 60m euros (£51.4m) in guaranteed payments, with a further 11m euros (£9.4m) available through variables and add-ons.

The move represents Barcelona’s biggest signing of the summer transfer window so far and brings to an end Rodri’s time in Manchester, where he has established himself as one of the leading defensive midfielders in world football.

He is set to wear the number 16 shirt at Barcelona. The number has been associated with him for most of his career and has become a distinctive part of his identity on the pitch.

Supporters’ excitement was evident as the midfielder arrived at the Joan Gamper complex, with the crowd applauding and repeatedly calling his name before he entered the training-ground facilities. His public presentation later on Tuesday will provide the first formal opportunity for Barcelona fans to see their new player in the club’s colours.
