Rodri transfer would signal Barcelona are ready to choose their future again

Barcelona beating Real Madrid to the signing of Spain midfielder Rodri would represent a major shift in the balance of power between the two La Liga rivals and send a clear message about the Catalan club’s renewed ambitions in the transfer market.

According to The Athletic, it would have seemed unrealistic until recently for Barcelona to win a major transfer battle of this scale against Real Madrid.

In recent summer windows, Barcelona have often been forced to focus on whether they could register new players, while Real Madrid appeared able to identify and sign the biggest names in world football with far fewer complications.

Real Madrid’s acquisitions of Jude Bellingham in 2023 and Kylian Mbappe in 2024 reinforced the belief that, when Europe’s finest players reached a crossroads, the Santiago Bernabeu was their inevitable destination.

Barcelona have still attracted several high-profile players since Lionel Messi left the club in tears in 2021. Financial pressure had forced the club to part with the greatest player in its history, who subsequently joined Paris St-Germain.

Robert Lewandowski arrived in August 2022, while Dani Olmo joined in 2024. Barcelona also signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for a fee of 80m euros before the World Cup.

The club’s hierarchy believes its financial position is now stronger because revenues have increased following the return to Camp Nou. Barcelona also insist that a move for Rodri, valued at about 80m euros by Manchester City, would not affect their efforts to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid.

For several years, Barcelona have had to work within La Liga’s spending regulations while finding creative financial solutions to build a squad capable of competing for the UEFA Champions League.

That situation changed the club’s role in the market. Rather than setting the pace, Barcelona became a team looking for opportunities, relying on free agents, players willing to accept reduced wages to wear the blue-and-red shirt, experienced professionals approaching the end of their careers and promising young talent.

The approach has delivered results. Barcelona have won three of the past four La Liga titles, helped by the emergence of one of the finest generations produced by the La Masia academy. Real Madrid won the 2023-24 campaign, but Barcelona have since returned to the latter stages of elite European competition.

Those successes have not completely restored the club’s former prestige, which is why the potential signing of Rodri carries such significance.

A statement signing

Rodri would give manager Hansi Flick arguably the best defensive midfielder in world football and the player most closely comparable in the modern era to Barcelona great Sergio Busquets.

The wider importance of the transfer would lie in persuading the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner and captain of the World Cup-winning national team to choose Barcelona over Real Madrid.

Rodri has long been admired by Real Madrid and fits the profile of player the Spanish giants have traditionally targeted. If he selected Barcelona instead, it would deliver a particularly strong message to the rest of the football world.

Neymar was the last genuine superstar to make a comparable choice. In 2013, when he was 21, the Brazilian forward attracted serious interest from Real Madrid but opted to leave Santos for Camp Nou.

Barcelona were a very different force at that time. They won the treble in 2009 and repeated the achievement in 2015, driven by the outstanding attacking partnership of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar. Those years remain a source of deep nostalgia for supporters, something Barcelona president Joan Laporta understands well.

Laporta is widely regarded as highly skilled at selling a vision. The 64-year-old knows the football industry, understands what supporters want to hear and has become adept at presenting that message.

However, the club’s financial circumstances have required him to moderate his more populist rhetoric in recent times. A deal for Rodri would give him the opportunity to revive it with considerable force.

The Spain captain is 30 and was voted the best player at the World Cup after Spain defeated Argentina in the final. His profile represents the kind of signing Barcelona had almost forgotten it could make.

Barcelona sporting director Deco said in an interview with TV3 in February 2024: “Replacing Sergio Busquets is almost impossible.”

He added: “He is a very special player and completely unique. There is nobody like him on the market, and even if there were, they would not come because they would not sell him. The closest player to him is Rodri, who is at City, but I imagine City would not sell him to us or anyone else.”

At the time, Deco’s comments appeared to reflect Barcelona’s difficult situation more than a judgement on Rodri’s quality. The irony now is that Barcelona are no longer desperate for a defensive midfielder.

Xavi spent two years searching for Busquets’ successor before eventually adapting to life without him. Marc Casado has performed well under Flick, Marc Bernal has emerged as an outstanding young prospect, Eric Garcia has excelled in the defensive midfield role and Frenkie de Jong has recently produced some of his best football.

In that context, the club’s priorities appear to have shifted towards other areas. The arrivals of Gordon and Karim Adeyemi addressed attacking positions, leaving midfield as the most crowded part of the squad before De Jong’s recent injury.

Rodri would therefore not be joining because Barcelona lack alternatives. His arrival would be driven by the rarity of finding a player of his stature and value available on the market.

His signing would not fundamentally transform Barcelona, nor would the club require him to prove that its recovery is under way. The trophies won under Flick have already achieved much of that.

But for the first time in years, Barcelona could become the club setting the direction of the transfer market rather than attempting to keep up with it.

That may be the greatest victory of all: not simply signing one of the world’s finest midfielders, but once again becoming the club that players of Rodri’s standing actively choose.
