Rodri makes winning Barcelona debut and hails Lamine Yamal’s emotional response

Rodri made his first appearance for Barcelona in Thursday’s 2-0 win over Athletic Club at Spotify Camp Nou, entering the game as a second-half substitute and helping his new side control the closing stages.

The midfielder came on in the 62nd minute for Marc Bernal to play his first minutes in a Barcelona shirt. He had missed the club’s opening La Liga fixture against Elche.

According to Sport, Rodri was greeted by a loud and enthusiastic reception from the Barcelona supporters inside Spotify Camp Nou. The home crowd applauded warmly as the new arrival stepped on to the pitch for the first time.

Rodri did not need long to show one of the qualities he can bring to Barcelona. The Spain international repeatedly made himself available to receive the ball, offering his team-mates a reliable passing option whenever Athletic Club attempted to apply pressure.

His presence also allowed Barcelona to reduce the tempo and play with greater composure. Rodri made a positive impression in the air as well, winning several individual contests during his brief appearance.

Speaking to DAZN after the match, Rodri said he was delighted to have begun his Barcelona career with a victory.

“Satisfied to play my first match. Happy with the victory, we have won two out of two. It is important for me to regain my rhythm and adapt to this great team. I have good feelings,” he said.

The midfielder acknowledged that he still has work to do after a lengthy summer away from competitive football, but was pleased with the way his debut unfolded.

“It has been a long summer, and I have to regain my rhythm quickly. I am very happy with the way things went, and I am where I wanted to be. Now we have to work,” Rodri added.

Rodri also praised Lamine Yamal, who was one of the outstanding performers in Barcelona’s victory over Athletic Club.

The midfielder said the young winger had been going through a more difficult period and that his team-mates had tried to give him encouragement. Yamal responded with an influential display as Barcelona secured another win at the start of the campaign.

“It is amazing. He was going through a period when he was sadder, and we tried to lift his spirits. We saw the best version of Lamine,” Rodri said.

Barcelona’s victory over Athletic Club followed their opening La Liga success against Elche, giving them two wins from two matches. For Rodri, the game marked the first step in his adaptation to his new club after his delayed start to the season.
