Rodri agrees Barcelona move as Real Madrid reject panic response

Rodri has decided to join Barcelona, dealing Real Madrid a significant blow in the summer transfer window after advanced negotiations between the Spain midfielder and the Spanish club.

The 30-year-old Manchester City player had been at the centre of a contest involving Real Madrid, Barcelona and the possibility of remaining at City. His stock rose further after he impressed for Spain at the 2026 World Cup, where he won the tournament and was named its best player.

Rodri had appeared close to moving to Real Madrid after discussions over a four-year contract. However, the direction of the deal changed unexpectedly when Barcelona stepped up their interest. Head coach Hansi Flick and several Spanish players already at the Catalan club are reported to have helped persuade Rodri to join Barcelona’s project.

Reports say Rodri has reached an agreement with Barcelona, leaving the club to negotiate a fee with Manchester City. City had previously valued the midfielder at about 80m euros.

Barcelona are expected to begin with an offer worth 60m euros, made up of 45m euros in guaranteed payment and a further 15m euros in incentives and add-ons. The club has reportedly decided to redirect money initially intended for a defender towards strengthening midfield, particularly with Frenkie de Jong absent because of injury.

Despite the importance of Rodri to their plans, Real Madrid have chosen not to respond aggressively to his decision or create a fresh dispute with the player.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, citing Spanish newspaper AS, Real Madrid officials understood that the transfer could only be completed if Rodri was fully convinced about moving to the club. That conviction, the report says, was not evident to the club’s officials at Valdebebas during the negotiations.

AS says Real Madrid accepted Rodri’s reasons and respected his choice. The club also wished him well with the move he had selected and did not regard the failed deal as a crisis.

Jose Mourinho had been kept informed of the negotiations throughout the process. The manager believes Real Madrid already have players capable of operating in midfield, strengthening the view that the club will not seek a direct replacement for Rodri.

El Mundo also reports that Real Madrid do not intend to return to the transfer market for another midfielder after losing out on the Spain international.

The newspaper says club officials regard Rodri’s decision as primarily a personal one and believe it must be accepted. Real Madrid did make what they considered a “very good” offer, reflecting a genuine desire to sign him, but the deal ultimately failed to materialise.

Mourinho is said to be satisfied with the options currently available to him, meaning there is no immediate plan to sign another player for Rodri’s position.

Rodri’s agent praised the way Real Madrid and club president Florentino Perez conducted the negotiations, saying the Spanish club maintained a professional and positive relationship throughout the discussions.

The calm response from Real Madrid has not been shared by all of their supporters. A significant section of the club’s fanbase has expressed anger at the prospect of Rodri joining Barcelona, their major domestic rivals.

Marca reported that many Real Madrid fans considered Rodri the ideal midfielder to strengthen the squad, both technically and financially, particularly after he was named the best player at the 2026 World Cup.

The newspaper also said Real Madrid’s social media accounts were flooded with messages calling for the club to sign him. Images of Rodri were widely shared, while the slogan “Sign Rodri” became a repeated demand among supporters.
