Riyad Mahrez weighs final European challenge as Serie A clubs monitor his future

Riyad Mahrez is considering a return to European football after becoming a free agent, with Como and AS Roma among the clubs reportedly interested in the Algeria international.

The 35-year-old has spent the past three seasons in the Saudi Arabian league but is understood to be seriously tempted by the prospect of one last major challenge on the continent. Sources close to the player, cited by Al Mounasser, say several clubs have registered an interest in his situation.

Mahrez is believed to be prioritising an ambitious sporting project rather than the financial rewards that have accompanied his time in Saudi Arabia. A move to Serie A is thought to appeal to him in particular, having already played in France and England during a career that has included success at the highest level.

Como are considered one of the possible destinations. The Lombardy club enjoyed an impressive campaign in Serie A, securing qualification for the next Champions League, and are now looking to strengthen their squad ahead of their first experience of European football’s most prestigious competition.

Como sporting director Carlalberto Ludi has denied that the club has held direct talks with Mahrez. However, the club is reportedly continuing to monitor the winger’s position.

Mahrez’s experience and honours could make him an attractive addition for a side preparing to compete in Europe. He has played regularly at the highest level and would bring experience of major domestic and continental competitions to a squad facing a significant step up in its schedule.

AS Roma are also familiar with the player’s situation. The club attempted to sign Mahrez in 2017, when he was emerging as one of Leicester City’s most prominent players. That move did not materialise, and Mahrez instead remained in the Premier League before joining Manchester City.

His spell with Manchester City significantly expanded his collection of medals. During his time at the club, he won major domestic and continental trophies, further underlining the pedigree he could offer Roma should they decide to turn their reported interest into a formal approach.

Mahrez’s financial position is not expected to be the decisive factor in his next move following his lucrative period in Saudi Arabia. He is understood to have considerable freedom over his choice and would prefer to return to a competitive environment in Europe.

The Algerian’s reported aim is to re-establish himself at the top level, compete in continental tournaments again and take on one final challenge before ending his playing career. A move to either Como or AS Roma would give him the chance to begin another chapter, with Italy currently appearing to be his preferred destination.
