Algeria star Riyad Mahrez unlikely to join Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca
A move to Morocco for Algeria international Riyad Mahrez appears unlikely, despite reports linking the former Manchester City and Al-Ahli winger with Wydad Casablanca.
Wydad had reportedly considered making an approach for Mahrez after he became a free agent, but reports from the Algerian media have now ruled out the possibility of an actual transfer.
According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadh, the idea of signing Mahrez was no more than an initial thought from the Moroccan club and did not develop into a concrete move.
Wydad face strong competition
Even if Wydad were to pursue the Algeria star, the club would face significant competition for his signature.
Mahrez has attracted interest from Italian side Roma as well as clubs in the Saudi Pro League, giving the 35-year-old several potential options for the next stage of his career.
His status as a free agent makes him an attractive target, but his experience and quality are likely to make it difficult for Wydad to compete with clubs from Europe’s major leagues and the Gulf.
For now, there is no indication that negotiations between Mahrez and Wydad have progressed beyond speculation.
Mahrez brings elite experience
Mahrez has enjoyed a distinguished career at the highest level of European football.
The Algerian played a major role in Manchester City’s success, winning the Premier League four times between 2018 and 2023.
He subsequently moved to Saudi Arabia, where he continued his career with Al-Ahli before becoming a free agent.
His experience at club and international level remains a major attraction, with his technical ability and record of winning major trophies making him one of Africa’s most accomplished players of his generation.
Shock Wydad move remains unlikely
Wydad’s interest in Mahrez would represent a major statement if the club could bring the Algerian to Casablanca.
However, current reports suggest that such a move is unlikely, with the player attracting interest from clubs in Europe and Saudi Arabia.
For the moment, the possibility of Mahrez joining Wydad remains speculation rather than an advanced transfer negotiation.
