Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez, who plays for Al-Ahli Jeddah, opened up about identity, faith, and a football dream that never came true.
Calm and grounded, Mahrez shared that one of his biggest wishes was to play alongside Karim Benzema, not just in Saudi Arabia, but for their shared homeland.
“It would have been amazing to partner with him for Algeria,” Mahrez told CARRE, reflecting on what could’ve been a powerful pairing. But while Benzema chose France, Mahrez stayed firm in his roots.
The former Manchester City star remains unapologetically proud of representing Algeria, stating he never once looked back on his decision. That choice, he said, came from the heart, not ambition.
Off the pitch, Mahrez says life in Saudi Arabia brings him peace. The rhythm of evening training, time with his family, and an atmosphere steeped in his faith have brought a sense of calm.
“In Saudi Arabia, you feel closer to God,” he shared, praising the presence of mosques and a lifestyle aligned with his beliefs.
