Riyad Mahrez has reunited with his former Manchester City teammates, making a brief visit to the Etihad Campus during Al Ahli Saudi SC’s European pre-season tour.
With Al Ahli holding training camps in Austria and later Spain, the Algerian international took the opportunity to travel to England, where he was warmly welcomed by familiar faces at his former club. Manchester City’s official website shared photographs of the occasion, showing smiles and embraces as Mahrez caught up with players and staff.
The meeting was especially notable for the moment he shared with manager Pep Guardiola. The two were pictured in a heartfelt embrace, reflecting mutual respect built over five seasons together. While Mahrez’s role in Guardiola’s squad was not always consistent, his impact on the pitch remained significant.
A decorated five-year spell
Mahrez’s time at Manchester City left an indelible mark on the club’s recent history. Arriving in 2018 from Leicester City, the winger went on to win 11 major trophies, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and — in his final season — the UEFA Champions League.
Across 236 appearances, 169 of which were starts, Mahrez scored 78 goals and provided 56 assists. His creativity, technical quality, and ability to deliver in decisive moments earned him a lasting place in the memories of City supporters.
Despite his success, some analysts and fans believed Guardiola did not always make full use of Mahrez’s abilities, often rotating him out of the starting lineup.
Yet, the Algerian remained a key contributor whenever called upon, delivering consistent end product across domestic and European competitions.
A warm reunion
Mahrez’s visit appeared to bridge his past and present. While now focused on his role at Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League, he seemed genuinely pleased to return to Manchester and reconnect with the group with whom he shared some of the greatest moments of his career.
For Guardiola, the reunion was equally positive. The warm interaction between coach and player suggested a continued appreciation, even after professional paths diverged.
Mahrez’s departure in the summer of 2023 was part of a wave of high-profile moves to Saudi Arabia, but his legacy at City remains secure. The titles, statistics, and memorable performances speak for themselves, as does the reception he received on his return.
Looking ahead
While Mahrez now plies his trade in the Middle East, his ties to Manchester City remain strong. The Algerian captain’s visit served as a reminder of his contributions to one of the most successful eras in the club’s history and highlighted the mutual respect between player, manager, and teammates.
For City fans, it was a welcome chance to celebrate a former favourite — not as an opponent, but as a champion who once wore their colours and helped bring European glory to the Etihad.
