Riyad Mahrez defends playing street football in Saudi Arabia amid criticism
Algerian international and Al-Ahly star Riyad Mahrez has addressed recent criticism after a video surfaced showing him playing football on a street in Saudi Arabia alongside his teammate, Frank Kessie.
In response to a journalist’s question during a post-match press conference at King Abdullah Stadium in Jeddah, Mahrez defended his actions, saying, “Why can’t I play in the street? I have a day off, and I can play wherever I want if I feel like it.”
Mahrez clarified that he played the street match at 8 p.m., countering reports that suggested he was playing at dawn. “All the information circulating is false; I did not play at dawn,” he added.
This statement follows Al-Ahly’s victory over Al-Raed, led by Mahrez, who contributed to his team’s 2-0 win on Friday.
The victory marked Al-Ahly’s fourth win of the season, elevating them to sixth place in the Roshen League standings.
Mahrez, a key player for Algeria’s national team, has played in 15 matches across all competitions with Al-Ahly this season, bringing his individual goal tally to ninth place in the league rankings.
The video, which quickly gained traction online, has sparked mixed reactions among fans and sports commentators, with some questioning the appropriateness of a professional footballer engaging in street play.
However, Mahrez’s direct response has only added to his reputation as a player who connects with the public on and off the field.
