Riyad Mahrez’s leadership role questioned despite strong track record
Riyad Mahrez’s role as captain of the Algerian national team has come under renewed discussion ahead of the World Cup, although the winger remains widely viewed as the established leader of the side.
The Al-Ahli player has long been associated with the captaincy of the Fennecs, combining experience, influence and a consistent presence within the squad.
Despite this, speculation has recently suggested that the armband could instead be handed to Aïssa Mandi, a development that has reopened a debate many consider unnecessary at this stage.
For a large section of observers, Mahrez remains the natural choice to lead Algeria into a major international tournament. His standing within the group is built on years of service, sustained performance levels, and a clear influence both on and off the pitch.
He has already captained the national team on multiple occasions, a responsibility he has carried with composure. Within the squad environment, he is frequently seen as a figure who helps steady the team during key moments, while also guiding younger players through high-pressure situations.
Mahrez’s case is further strengthened by his extensive club career. Across more than 660 professional appearances, he has scored close to 200 goals and registered over 150 assists.
During his time at Manchester City, he made 236 appearances, scoring 78 goals and providing 59 assists, while collecting a significant list of honours, including four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three Carabao Cups, and a Champions League triumph.
Individually, he has also been recognised at the highest level, winning Premier League Player of the Year in 2016 and African Player of the Year in the same year. Earlier in his career, he played a key role in Leicester City’s unexpected Premier League title win in 2016.
At international level, Mahrez has earned more than 110 caps for Algeria, scoring 38 goals and providing 44 assists.
He was also a central figure in Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2019, one of the country’s most significant achievements in recent years.
With Algeria preparing for a major tournament, his experience and track record continue to position him as a leading candidate to retain the captaincy.
