Riyad Mahrez closes in on UAE return with Al-Wasl contract offer

Riyad Mahrez is edging closer to a move to the United Arab Emirates, with Al-Wasl reportedly preparing a two-year contract with an option for a third season for the free agent.

The former Algeria captain remains without a club and is therefore able to complete a move even after the transfer window closes. Al-Wasl have emerged as a potential destination in recent hours as they look to secure the winger’s services.

Mahrez had been linked with a possible return to European football, but his plans now appear to be pointing towards another spell in the UAE.

The 35-year-old is understood to be considering a final stint in the United Arab Emirates, where he also intends to establish himself around his business interests. At the same time, he wants to continue his playing career and maintain his sporting motivation.

Al-Wasl’s participation in the AFC Champions League could be an important factor in Mahrez’s decision. The UAE club are keen to bring in the experienced winger and will compete in the continental competition.

Mahrez has previous experience of success in the AFC Champions League, having won the tournament in consecutive seasons with Al Ahli Saudi FC, his former club.

Financial terms are also understood to be part of Al-Wasl’s proposal. The club’s management is reportedly offering Mahrez a salary of €7 million, excluding bonuses.

That figure would represent a significant reduction from the more than €40 million Mahrez was earning annually in Saudi Arabia. Despite the difference, the proposed package would still provide substantial income for the former Fennecs captain.

Mahrez has also decided to end his international career following the 2026 World Cup. During the tournament, he finished as Algeria’s leading scorer with two goals.

The possibility of facing his former club could add another dimension to Mahrez’s potential move to Al-Wasl.

Al-Wasl are scheduled to meet Al Ahli Saudi FC on 12 October in the second match of the AFC Champions League’s West Region. The game will take place in Dubai.

By that point, Mahrez would be expected to have reached his best physical condition, despite not having taken part in a pre-season training camp.

The next stage of Mahrez’s club career therefore appears increasingly likely to take place in the UAE, with Al-Wasl emerging as the leading option and a contract covering at least two seasons reportedly on the table.
